Slow start to the season

So far this fall there's been many changes in our lives. We have finally moved to eastern Idaho I now live on the north side of Idaho Falls. With the new move came challenges of where to find game.

West of Idaho Falls is some of my favorite country in the whole world. As you can see in the first picture it is like a sea of sagebrush. It goes on and on and on.

In the second picture you'll see some sage grouse poop that I found a top of a cinder butte in the middle of nowhere. Rising up from the desert floor gave me this beautiful overlook.

I have been fortunate enough to find sage grouse on every trip to the desert. I'm looking forward to bringing 1 of these big beautiful birds to the bag. One thing I love about the desert is being able to watch the dogs do their work.

Recently I had the chance to take Taron Keaton my older boys to the NAFA meet in Vernal Utah over the week of thanksgiving. It was a good experience for all of us, But I'm afraid we might have to take a pass on future ones until the younger boys are old enough to go.

Here are some of the best puppies your will ever find. These are from Honky Tonk Additude lines from the male and from heavy Elhew Damascus lines on the female. As you can see they are full of point at only 6 weeks old. They will be ready to go to their new homes as early as next week. Please let me know if you are interested. They are $400 each + shipping. I know that time are tough for a lot of people right now, so I will consider all trades. I lean more towards hunting and fishing supplies. Just let me know what you have. Honky Tonk Puppies

This first picture is of Honky Tonk Addittude. HTA is a outstanding field trial dog and has sired some great pups.

This is Rock. Rocky is out stud dog and the grand son of Honky Tonk Additude. Rocky just sired a batch of really nice looking puppies that are about a week old right now. These puppies have had the dew claws removed, will have had there first round of shots and are AFC registered. They are $400 each. Let me know if you anyone is interested. I will consider all trades but would obviously prefer hunting supplies.

This is the new bird Helga, she is a female Gyr/Saker. She is doing real well and am excited to be flying her.

This is Chloe my female Gyr/Peregrine. She has been molting out well and is done except for a few body feathers.

This little guy is Vertigo my tiercel Peales peregrine. He is a great little game hawk.

Here is a front view of Chloe. She is looking more and more like a gyr falcon. When I pulled her and first weighed her, she weighed in at a tubby 1400 grams. Great bird. Thanks for looking.

This is the new album from good friend Marcus Eaton. I met Marcus in the early 90's when he was just a kid starting out in falconry. The album cover is a picture of my female Gyr/Peregrine Chloe. Sky my wife took this photo in our front yard. We were pretty excited to finally see the finished product. Marcus is an amazing artist with a very unique sound that most every one would enjoy. Memorial weekend at my secret spot pulling a prairie falcon eyeas. We stayed the night before at Lake Wallcot in South Central Idaho and a great campground. Good friends Chris and Michele Wall and Emily Albiston came up from Utah to spend time with us. And Brad Smoot and his son also joined us for a very fun weekend.

Here is Brad climbing up the rock face about 20' to the eyerie.

There were five total offspring. One tiercel and four females.

Here is one of the adults wanting to nock Brad off the cliff. The closest past was about 10' above him.

Meet LuLu. Cooper wanted to name her. She is growing very fast.

Just another look at the cliff face. Pretty exciting.

On the way up, even noticed some sunning rattle snakes. A little nerv racking.

Thurman Pratt came to spend the weekend with us and see the birds fly. He was my on time apprentice. He works hard at it and is doing a good job. Keep Thurman.

Getting ready to fly Chloe. I made the mistake of getting Chloe to low and subsequently didn't want to fly like she usualy does. Quite a bumber, because she was the one I was most excited to fly. Oh well. There is always next year.

This is Pagen. I chose not to fly her in the trials, because it had been a couple of weeks sinse she had flown. That was probably not the best choice. I flew her Friday after all was done. She flew amazing. Figures. Still very fun to watch.

Jason is having great success catching starlings in the mink barns of Morgan Utah. Go gettem.

Notice the blood around the right eye. Those little starlings are tough and put up a good fight.

This is Steve Chingrines dog retrieving the pigion after his bird made an AWESOME killing stoop. I think the bird was trying to figure out what was going on. Pretty funny. Steve I am sure is laughing all the way to the bank. Good job Steve.

This is Pagen the bird I chose not to fly because she hadn't been flown in about two weeks. That was probably a mistake. I chose to fly her Friday after the trials and she was amazing, driving the pigion into cover. Pretty cool. Maybe next year.

This bird is Chloe. I chose lower her weight so I might get a better response in front of every one at the trials. That was also a mistake, because I got her to low. She was the one that I was most excited about and I screwed it up. Maybe next year with her also.

Idaho Falconers Association anual field meet in Eden

This past weekend we hosted the Idaho Falconers Association's annual field meet here in Eden. Despite the wind, we had a great turn out of people from all over. Those that were patient and persistent got some real great flights. Sunday morning was the best weather of the weekend. Thank you to every one that participated and helped. There were several people that devoted a lot of their time and energies.

This should be a fun year for the breeding project. We just made a real nice addition to the project. She is a 65oz female silver gyr falcon. I put her with a real nice jerkin. So we'll see if any thing happens. All I know is that there is alot of courting going on.

City of Rocks 20 year celabration

On September 20th I was privileged to attend the City of Rocks 20 year celebration. I met Kelly Hardy and Rick Hoover (fellow falconer) where we gave a simple Q&A presentation of birds of prey. There was a great turn out despite the rainy weather. It was just nice to be able to get to know the two of them a bit better. I had the two hybrid falcons and Uma the Harris female. Rick brought his tiercel passage red tail, and Kelly brought her tiercel harris Seven. It was a lot of fun. I look forward to doing things with the two of them in the future.

Today (9/18/08) I flew Uma my female Harris hawk. Today was her first flight flying free. We walked around the rock pit just to the East of us. Before to long a large Jack rabbit broke and started running to the North. She was off like lightning. Just before she got there, the jack disappeared. She did this two more time. What an effort. She hasn't ever even seen a jack or fur for that matter. I probably need to just give her a baggy first. Pretty exciting stuff though. See ya.

Smoke's first flight

Tuesday (16th) evening I decided that it was time to take Smoke my Gyr/Peregrine Hybrid falcon out and free fly him for the first time of the year. The sun was just starting to drop over the hill. It was pretty cool outside with a very slight breeze. When I picked him up off the perch, I could tell that he was ready to fly. He gripped the glove and started pumping his wings intently. I slipped off the hood and away he went. Man! It was as if he never stopped for the summer. He didn't take a huge pitch but still pretty respectable. He was up about 400' when I released a very fast racing Homer. He put on the after burners in his stoop, touching the pigeon. Normally if he touches the bird he thinks that it is his. NOT this time. He chased it for about 15 minutes, finally braking it off when he realised he wasn't catching it. I quickly through out the lure and watched him come speeding down. Any time you get your bird back, it is a good flight. Pretty sweet. This year aught to be fun. See ya.

Today I was feeding a pair of peregrins that I have when I noticed that my female was holding tight on the nest ledge. She was sitting on her first egg. Then this evening I noticed that she was sitting on a seconed egg. Pretty sweet
